Overview

House Margarita is a traditional stone house in Mavrikiano, above Schisma, Elounda. It sits a few metres beyond House Leonidas, with its main gate on the right beneath an arch. The house covers 120 m² across the ground floor and first floor, with a ground-level stone courtyard and a first-floor veranda looking toward Elounda Bay.

It accommodates up to six guests and works well for families or friends who want separated sleeping areas, a sea-view veranda, and a village setting close to the other sea-view houses.

House Layout

Entry is through the arched main gate into an open stone courtyard. The main kitchen is at courtyard level, on the left as guests enter. The bathroom is also accessed from this courtyard area. An arched door leads from the courtyard into the interior of the house.

Inside, the ground-floor living room has a stone-built fireplace and traditional seating. A stone arch opens through to a dining area and the first sleeping area, where a double bed is set within the open-plan room. One step up from here, a second double bed occupies a mid-level space where the natural rock of the hillside is exposed through the walls.

A stone staircase leads from the ground floor to the first floor. On this level, a bedroom with two single beds has direct access to the sea-view veranda. The outdoor kitchenette is also on this level, making the veranda the main outdoor living and dining space.

Inside the House

The house is built from local stone throughout, complemented by traditional handcrafted wooden furniture. The ground floor uses stone arches to divide the living and sleeping zones without fully enclosing them. The exposed rock at the mid-level shows where the house is built directly into the hillside.

The living room includes a stone fireplace for cooler evenings. The stone walls and exposed rock help the interior stay cool naturally. A flat-screen TV, a safety deposit box, and wardrobe storage are provided for convenience in the sleeping areas.

Outdoor Living

The first-floor veranda is the primary outdoor space. It faces toward Elounda Bay, with a wide view across the water and surrounding hills. The outdoor kitchenette on this level makes it practical to prepare food and dine outside without returning to the ground-floor kitchen.

At ground level, the open stone courtyard provides entry to the house and access to the main kitchen and bathroom. It should be understood as an entry courtyard, not as the main outdoor sitting area.

Location

Mavrikiano is a quiet village set on the hillside above Elounda, reached by a short uphill road from the coastal town. The setting offers a peaceful atmosphere with local tavernas just 20 meters away. Elounda town and its waterfront are an approximate ten-minute walk or a three-minute drive. From the house, Plaka village and the boat to Spinalonga are 4.4 km away, an approximate seven-minute drive.

Suitability

House Margarita is well suited to families or groups of friends who want a sea-view veranda, space to spread across the ground floor and first floor, and a base in a village setting rather than on the waterfront. The multi-level layout gives the house architectural character, but it also means stairs are a regular part of using the house.

It is not well suited to guests who require step-free access, or to those who want a pool.

Practical Notes

  • Courtyard Bathroom: The bathroom is accessed via the courtyard area—not from inside the house. Guests should be aware of this before booking.
  • Stairs and Access: The house has internal stairs between the ground floor and first floor. It is not step-free; there is also at least one step from the path to the entrance. The veranda is secure, but children should be supervised.
  • Air Conditioning: Air conditioning is provided on the ground floor and in the first-floor bedroom with the two single beds. The stone construction also helps the house stay cooler naturally.
  • Parking: Shared private guest parking is available approximately 70 m from the house, with space for up to 5 cars in total; if the shared parking area is full, guests can usually park for free around the village.
